It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the members of the Midsomer Norton Probus Club.

First there was a great talk by one of the members, Tony Daniels – his knowledge of his subject Thomas Hardy was beyond belief, and his passion for the subject came over loud and clear.

Tony gave a detailed account of Hardy’s life. He was born in 1840 and was an English novelist and poet. He was highly critical of much in Victorian Society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain, such as those from his native South West England. His first collection of poetry was not published until 1898, and he became an author known for such novels as Far from the Madding Crowd and Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

Hardy became ill with pleurisy in December 1927, and died at Max Gate, Dorchester, on 11th January, 1928. His ashes were put in the famous Poets Corner, while his heart was buried in the grave of his first wife at Stinsford. There was resounding applause from the members at the conclusion of Tony’s excellent talk.

A few days later, it was a day trip out to the Gin Factory at Laverstoke Mill, organised by Eric Smith. The members and guests enjoyed the guided tour around the factory, ending with the best cocktail ever! Then it was on to Winchester for lunch and a spot of shopping.
