New road safety signage has been erected in Peasedown St John in an attempt to cut vehicle speeds.

New Buildings, a well-used through-road between Bath Road and Carlingcott, has had green advisory 20 mph signs for some time, but some drivers have taken little notice of them.

Long-serving councillor and road safety campaigner, Cllr Sarah Bevan (Independent, Peasedown St John), has been working with B&NES Council’s Traffic & Safety department since the start of the year to see these new, bigger signs erected.

She said: “If someone gets hit by a car driving at 30 mph, there is a 20% chance they will be killed. When the speed limit is cut to 20 mph, the chance of a fatality drastically reduces to just 2.5%! Vehicles travelling at lower speed limits is safer for everyone, especially in residential areas like New Buildings, Peasedown St John.

“I first started campaigning for a lower, safer speed limit in this street back in 2006, so I am pleased that years of perseverance have been worth it, with these new and improved 20 mph speed limit signs. I’m grateful to all the residents who have lobbied me about this issue over the years.”

Peasedown St John’s Independent councillors have had a lot of success in securing a raft of new road safety measures in Carlingcott, Firgrove Lane, Ashgrove, Braysdown Lane, Eckweek Road and Orchard Way.
