The official ‘Opening Jam’ for Peasedown St John’s new Skatepark took place last Saturday, 29th August and was attended by residents, children and young adults from the local area as they celebrated the village’s new facility.

Parish Councillor, Jo Davis, who was part of the team overseeing the project, gave an opening speech and the Parish Councillors who attended the event took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Local MP, Jacob Rees-Mogg, also attended to lend his support.

Afterwards, there were scooter, BMX and skateboard competitions, with a great selection of prizes offered by the sponsors of the event. Maverick Industries, who ran the event, organised the competitions and provided the MC.

Parish Council Chair, Kathy Thomas, said: “The opening of the Skatepark completes the work that the Parish Council embarked on, using funds resulting from the Peasedown Meadows development. The project to install a new play area at Beacon Field and to build a Skatepark on the Recreation Ground has been well supported by local residents. Both parks have been well used and appreciated over the summer months and local police have already reported a reduction in anti-social behaviour, as young people now have something to occupy them.”

The event was a great success and was well supported by young people, parents and well-wishers. A team of volunteer skate, scooter and BMX riders have been recruited to help less experienced park users and to help keep the Parish Council informed of any maintenance issues or problems. The Parish Council hopes that this will ensure the park is used safely and will be enjoyed for many years to come.
