Beryl Heaton returned to the Norton Radstock Photographic Society for the fourth time on Thursday, to judge a monthly competition.

Beryl was very clear about her own criteria for success, not taking any item through to the final cut that had not truly featured the subject matter, and insisting on technical expertise, as well as strong compositional features.

A total of 56 entries in Mono and Colour sections provided interesting viewing, and Beryl’s comments and feedback were welcomed by members wanting to learn and improve.

The Mono section was won by Janice Cuer, with ‘Venice’, a shot that featured a large, modern cruise liner docked in the city, with traditional gondolas and gondoliers in the foreground.

Bill Collett took both second and third place with a study of cameras, ‘1937 and 2017’ and ‘Buildings Old and New’.

In the Colour section, the second place again went to Bill Collett. Graham Nicholls took third place with ‘Ancient and Modern’.

The ladies’ trip to Liverpool earlier in the summer again provided a number of entries, with Suzanne Ladd’s study of reflections of the old Liver Buildings in the new waterfront museum taking first place in the section.

Members will be critiquing each others’ efforts on Thursday, 26th October, and are currently out and about looking for ideas to fit the ‘Key’ and ‘Tombstones’ brief for the theme evening that follows on Thursday, 2nd November.

They will be equally busy preparing to hand in their entries for the upcoming November Open Print Competition due in that evening.

On Saturday, 11th November, the club holds its Annual Exhibition in the High Street Methodist Hall between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Come along and join us for a coffee and browse the prints on display – maybe buy a draw ticket or two and chance your luck on a Christmas Hamper!

We will be very pleased to see you, and welcome as many friends to the event as you can encourage.
