Bath and North East Somerset Council has been awarded £2 million by the Government for essential resurfacing work on Keynsham bypass.

Supported by an overall award of £5m by the Department for Transport, following a successful joint bid by B&NES Council and Bristol City Council, the scheme is part of a £6.4m improvement project on the A4/A4174 route to be carried out in the current financial year.

The work on Keynsham bypass and A4174 is one of nineteen projects across the country that has been awarded a share of a £75 million Government investment, to improve local roads and undertake essential repair work. The award was made after councils were asked to put forward bids for schemes which could make a real difference to road users and avoid more disruptive ongoing repair work further down the line.

In total, a £2.5 million maintenance and safety scheme will be undertaken to resurface the bypass, whilst undertaking any required

upgrades to the crash barriers and signage.

Councillor Mark Shelford (Conservative, Lyncombe), the Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport & Highways, said: “This is very welcome funding from Government that will allow us to undertake essential repair and resurfacing work on Keynsham bypass. The bypass was built in the 1960s and hasn’t been fully resurfaced for many years. By undertaking full resurfacing work on this major route, it will help us save money in the years ahead by reducing the need for ongoing maintenance and patch-up repairs.”
