Wanting to give something back to the nurses that cared for their son, heartbroken parents, Nigel and Su Crutchley, began raising money for CLIC Sargent after their son, Ben, died of a brain tumour, aged just nine years old in 2012.
The couple, along with Ben's older brother, Luke, set a target of raising £50,000, but have so far raised over £164,000 by taking part in half and full marathons, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, cycling from London to Paris and organising many events locally. They have since raised their target to £1 million by June 2017, to coincide with Nigel's fiftieth birthday.
Ben's father, Nigel Crutchley, explains how CLIC Sargent helped his family. "Sally and Ally are CLIC Sargent nurses, and they provided so much more than just medical advice. They guided us through how we told Ben's brother about what was happening, explained to us about the effects of radio and chemotherapy, helped us to navigate the never-ending NHS maze and supported us through some of the darkest hours anyone can imagine, but most importantly of all, they were there for Ben.
"Sally and Ally visited us 3–4 times each day towards the end. Together, we'd made sure that Ben didn't have to cope with any scary machines or have people around him that he didn't know. And they cared deeply about Su, Luke and I, they were always quietly there for each of us when we needed them the most, intuitively understanding what we were going through and making sure that we were prepared for what we had to face. They are still there for us now, over two years since we lost Ben, just making sure that we are doing OK and helping us with each stage of what, at times, feels like a never-ending wave of grief."
Nigel and Su are now organising their next fundraising event for CLIC Sargent for children with cancer on Saturday, 11th October – the Mells 10k, which will allow participants to either run, walk or bike two laps through the grounds of Mells Park Estate, which is not normally open to the public, starting and finishing at the Recreation Ground. The event is not a race and the aim is to get 1,000 people to take part, raising a minimum sponsorship of £100 each. There will also be a fun run for children, with age categories of under five, 5–7, 8–11 and 12–15. There will be toilet facilities and refreshments at Mells Recreation Ground and parking in the field behind St Andrew's Church.
