Last Sunday and this Tuesday, our towns and villages fell silent at 11 a.m. to remember all of those who have lost their lives to give us the freedom we enjoy today. Whilst this event is always poignant, 2014 marks the beginning of four years of commemorating the centenary of the First World War. It is also seventy years since D-Day, and the year that Britain ended its combat role in Afghanistan, after thirteen years, with the loss of 453 UK service personnel. The area has already begun marking the Centenary of World War One with special events held locally, with many more to come. This week, The Journal captures the moment we all stopped, and remembered.
