Last year, The Journal followed the story of local runners, Jim Plunkett-Cole, Neil Taylor and Alfredo the dog, as they raised over £20,000 for four different charities by running 10k every day for the entire year. In January this year, we reported on Jim Plunkett-Cole's initiative to get an online 'tribe' running every day throughout 2014, setting personal goals of their own. And so he has.
We also predicted that Jim wouldn't stop running. And he hasn't! He is now trying to run at least 10k each day for 1,000 consecutive days, in aid of Positive Action on Cancer and Happy Landings Animal Shelter, culminating on 27th September 2015.
Since the beginning of this year, over 100 people from the West of England and beyond have participated in the 2014Kx365 Challenge, attempting to run, walk, cycle or swim every day for each day of 2014. On New Year's Eve, many of these participants will be celebrating the successful completion of their challenge for the year.
The 2013 challenge for Jim, Neil and Alfredo ended with the Green Man Ultramarathon, circumnavigating Bristol on New Year's Eve. They were accompanied by many other runners for some, or all, of the route. Some fifty people joined in for the first 10k of the route, heading off from the Dovecote pub at 6 a.m. and up Dundry Hill in a head-torchlit procession punctuated with laughter and anticipation. It was a proper adventure for new and seasoned runners alike, with stunning views from the top of the hill as a city woke on New Year's Eve. The last day was followed by thousands on social media.
This year, a good number of the participants of the 2014kx365 Challenge will once again take on part, or all, of the 45.5 mile Green Man as a Grand Finale to their challenge on New Year's Eve. As with last year, the Challenge participants would like to invite anyone who wishes to join them on this last day of their challenge to come along and do as little, or as much, as they wish. The day is intended to be about friendly fun and participation, group endeavour and personal achievement.
The 2014kx365 participants will be broadcasting their progress around the route on several mobile and web-based apps on the day. Which means that folks can see exactly where key groups are and join in as appropriate, or simply give 'virtual' support on the Facebook page. They will be posting photos and updates as they go.
The 'event' is essentially a large group walk/run taking place in and around Bristol and so should be viewed as such by all who take part. It is entirely free to join in, though all participants and supporters are advised that they have full responsibility for the safety of themselves and their family should they join in and/or support. Last year, the runners had much support from some amazing people who had car bootfuls of cakes and other goodies, meeting them at checkpoints. The joy and appreciation for this, and excitement as they approached checkpoints to meet new runners and have a warm drink, helped make it a very warm and special day around Bristol.
A huge number of local running clubs, such as Somer AC and Frome Running Club, were involved in last year's event, either participating with members or supporting, and it is hoped they will return this year.Mike Karthäuser, the organiser of the day's events and himself a participant in the 2014Kx365 challenge, commented: "We're really looking forward to what should be an amazing day and a fitting end to everyone's daily endeavours for the whole of 2014. We look forward to being joined by folks and their families from all over the South West, if not from much further afield!"
The provisional start time for the event will be 6 a.m. from Long Ashton or Ashton Court.
