SAVE Felton Common and Bristol Airport Action Network are coordinating a series of events to keep local people abreast of the airport’s expansion plans.
A recent meeting between members of Save Felton Common and local councillors discussed the values of Felton Common as well as demonstrated the size of the lights the airport has planned for the site.
A spokesperson said: “There was a good turn out and everyone who attended was shocked by the scope and scale of the lights. It's vital we can demonstrate to local decision makers what the potential impact of these plans may be.”
Two public information events are planned including ‘Bristol Airport Expansion : The pros and cons’ on Tuesday June 9, 7.30pm at Chew Valley School which will look at the proposals and how to engage with the planning process.
Another event on Tuesday, June 16, at 7pm at Felton Village Hall focuses on the nature and wildlife implications of the expansion. Four local experts have been invited to give presentations about the common and the secret lives found there. Refreshments will be available with all welcome to attend.
An old song lamenting the loss of common land, ‘The Goose and the Common', has also been revived by a group of local singers, led by Regil-based musician Ted Waters.
The 18th Century song has been released on the Save Felton Common Facebook page and other digital platforms.
A spokesperson said: “The loss of common land is a story as old as our country. The song fits the situation we have with Bristol Airport, a foreign-owned airport attempting a land-grab from local people.
“In celebration of this moment we have re-recorded the song and hope to spread it far and wide to inspire all those who want to keep hold of the precious land and spaces that is common to all of us.”
