In 2002, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared September 21st as the permanent annual date for the International Day of Peace and this year it was once again celebrated throughout the world.

The multitude of events across the globe provided an opportunity for individuals, organisations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. In creating 'World Peace Day', the UN invited nations to work in cooperation to achieve a common goal: Peace for one day.

Every year at Norton Hill School, this event is marked, with all students taking part in a special activity during the school day whereby 'Peace Windmills' are made and displayed at the front of the school, to show the school's support for this ideology. During this week, students were invited to think about those less fortunate than themselves, those in war-torn countries and those suffering from the effects and devastation that conflict causes. These windmills contain messages of students' wishes for a more peaceful world, starting with the school community and beyond.

All students also participated in special Peace Assemblies, written and presented by Year 11 Language Leaders, who were ambassadors for this day.

The school is very proud to celebrate the event annually and would like to thank all of the students involved for their thoughtful insights into world conflict and how to make the world a more peaceful place.
