Radstock Town Council are appealing for the community to get behind them and help save Trinity Methodist Church for future generations of use. Despite its best efforts and negotiations, on 2nd April the Church network will be making a final decision on whether the building will be sold.
Councillors want the building to be kept for community use and had begun exploring options to ensure that would be so. For a while it looked hopeful that the building could be taken on, but this latest move symbolises a last throw of the dice to really find out how local people feel about this landmark building in the town.
The current likely decision by the Church is that the building will be put onto the open market for sale to the highest bidder (sealed bids).
If you can get along in time to an open event being held on the day The Journal was being distributed (Wednesday, 9th March)
between 4 pm – 7 pm, the Town Council would like to meet residents, groups, businesses and organisations who are interested in using and supporting the building as a community asset. To make sure the building has a future, it would have to have the backing of regular users and supporters.
If you cannot make the event but want to show your support, there is an online petition which can be found at: https://www.change.org/TrinityMethodistChurchRadstock
On the petition page the Town Council says: ‘We would like the Church to understand the need and the impact losing the building will have on our community and town, so we ask you to sign this petition in support of our plans. We want the building to remain as a centre for community use and sustain the town centre for future generations to come’.
The petition is aiming to reach 500 signatures and is so far nearing 270.
Trinity Methodist Church has been a part of the Radstock community since it was built in 1902. The Church was built with the support of the mining community and previously used as a school.
More recently the building has provided a welcome to the whole community, been used by community groups and charities, as well as volunteers running coffee mornings. The Church held its last service on Sunday, 30th January 2022.
If anyone can help the current effort in any way, please get in touch with Radstock Town Council by emailing: [email protected] or call: 01761 437962.
