A special service of thanksgiving was held in Exeter Cathedral on 19th July to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Children’s Hospice South West, in the presence of their Patron, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. Four members of Midsomer Norton Friends Group, representing the many generous supporters in our area, were privileged to attend.
As over 700 invited people gathered in the majestic cathedral to the beautiful sound of the Mousehole Male Voice Choir, an overwhelming buzz of joy radiated from children, families, carers, fundraisers and supporters. The service began with a procession from children and families representing each of the charity’s three hospices: Little Bridge House in Devon, Charlton Farm in Wraxall, Somerset and Little Harbour, in Cornwall. After a welcome and prayer from The Very Reverend Jonathan Draper, Dean of Exeter and introduction from long-standing Trustee, The Venerable Trevor Lloyd, CEO Eddie Farwell MBE co-founder of CHSW, with his late wife, Jill, spoke movingly about his personal journey in creating the charity following his own experience of caring for two life-limited children. He thanked the army of supporters and fundraisers who had helped fulfil a dream beyond his wildest imagination.
Director of Care and Deputy Chief Executive, Mandy Robbins, who has also worked for CHSW since its conception, spoke about her role and the impact the care makes on the children and families served through CHSW.
As guest of honor, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall was invited to light candles in remembrance of those children who have died over the years of the charity’s service and as a dedication to the continuing support the hospice provides to the children and families across the Southwest.
The service concluded with the beautiful singing of the Celtic Blessing by the Charlton Farm Hospice Choir and a blessing by The Bishop of Exeter.
Tears turned to smiles and laughter, as everyone spilled out into the sunshine of the Cathedral Green. A moving and most memorable service of thanksgiving, renewed dedication and joy that we four small soldiers in the vast army of supporters were proud and privileged to be part of on your behalf.
