Students from Somervale School embraced the true spirit of Sport Relief recently, with a week packed full of splashes, cakes and three-legged dashes to help those less fortunate than them.

The students learned the upsetting truths about child labour and the conditions that other teenagers have to endure in order to receive an education and were determined to make a difference. With a target of £500, it was never going to be easy, but there were plenty of events for students to get involved in.

Year 7 student, Tyler Beale, led an army of generous bakers, selling over 200 cakes during the week. Thursday saw arguably the highlight of the events, as students were handed the opportunity for a little revenge on their teachers! A special thanks to the five members of staff at Somervale who lined up to face a flurry of wet sponges from students. With hundreds of students looking on, a never-ending stream of sharp shooters from all years stepped up to land that

perfect shot, with every laugh, cheer and gasp felt by the crowd. Thanks must also go to two students – Emmie Down and Luke Ashman, who hosted netball and football shootouts, raising yet more money.

On Sport Relief Day, students walked, jogged and ran into school in their Sport Relief red and whites. They were dressed and ready for the Sport Relief Mile at lunchtime, with some runners aiming to complete the mile on their own and others deciding to opt for a three-legged run. There were many highlights from the three-legged runners, including two teachers who tied themselves to one another and set off from the start line! Not deterred by some light drizzle, everyone laughed their way round and it made for an excellent spectacle.

All of the week's antics meant that Somervale School has raised £507 for Sport Relief 2014, exceeding the target!

The school wished to extend a big thank you to all the students and staff who helped raise such a great total, for such a worthy cause.
