The seventh Seedy Saturday, seed swap, potato day and green fair dedicated to gardening, growing and community activities, was held at Timsbury Conygre Hall last Saturday, 12th March.
Visitors voted the event ‘better than ever’, which included a wide range of seeds, potatoes, plants, produce, crafts and gifts to browse, as well as community displays, expert talks, and the opportunity to chat with other gardeners over a slice of homemade cake.
Seedy Saturday is currently organised by just one person, but with over 350 enthusiastic gardeners and growers visiting during this locally loved four-hour event, the amount of work needed to put it together is becoming difficult and impractical to achieve alone.
Sam Ross, event organiser and author of the website, Get Seedy! explains: “I started Seedy Saturday seven years ago as a very local event. It required only a few hours preparation to get everything together for the first couple of years, but as it has grown, it now takes me around three months to organise.
“To continue to run Seedy Saturday and to enable it to grow, I need the assistance of a dedicated team of people to help, with: finding stallholders and local community groups to attend, organising volunteers to help run the event on the day, publicising the event, producing leaflets and promotional information, giving talks at local groups, managing the seed swap bank, plus all the little things that make the event what it is.
“Everyone who attends loves the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of Seedy Saturday. Our visitors are very enthusiastic, with many returning year after year to pick up something new for their gardens, as well as to share stories with like-minded people. I would love to see the event continue going from strength to strength and hope that the enthusiasm that makes people return each year may encourage some of them to help me with planning the next one.
“I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped at this year’s event, without whom Seedy Saturday wouldn’t have been possible. Seedy Saturday will be returning to Timsbury Conygre Hall on 11th March 2017 and I would like to ask that anyone who could help work with me to plan and run the event next year should get in touch by emailing: [email protected]”
