Midsomer Norton’s Somer Valley FM is working with local charity, SWALLOW, to offer training in media and broadcast skills to its members; teenagers and adults with learning disabilities.
Training started in early March and introduced three SWALLOW members to various elements of broadcasting, including studio systems, how to write a script, show planning, presenting and editing, as well as an introduction to the software used.
The group will work towards producing an ongoing radio programme featuring topics that will be of interest to a wide audience, including those with disabilities locally.
The project has been supported by Radstock and Westfield Big Local and St John’s Foundation, and gives people with learning disabilities an opportunity to have a voice and to build confidence and skills.
Dan, broadcast trainee, said: “I am really excited about learning how to make a radio show; I have always wanted to be a DJ.”
Dom Chambers, Somer Valley FM Radio Manager, said: “I have long wanted Somer Valley FM to work with SWALLOW, and thanks to our key local funders, this is now able to happen. Our job is to empower people with a voice and the skills it takes to make local radio.
“I have met the team and their enthusiasm is infectious. I have no doubt we will soon have a quality addition to our schedule and that excites me.”
