Two groups of trees that were planted in 2014 to mark the centenary of the start of World War One have received some much-needed ‘tender loving care’.

Four years ago, Peasedown St John Councillor, Sarah Bevan (Independent), teamed up with local tree action group More Trees for Bath & North East Somerset to plant magnolia trees in Eckweek Gardens and apple trees on the former orchard site in Orchard Way.

Last week, More Trees returned, along with volunteers from world leading dairy and plant-based food company, Danone, to prune and clean-up the trees.

Sarah said: “We were thrilled with the turnout last week at our Peasedown Tree Action Day. It’s always encouraging to receive support for our community-based projects from not only regional organisations, but international ones too!

“The trees are looking so much better now in both Eckweek Gardens and Orchard Way.”

Cllr Sarah Bevan also received a large donation of wood chippings from Neill Gretton Tree Surgeon and Arboriculturalists to retain moisture around each apple tree and keep weeds away from the bases.

Last week’s action day is part of a wider initiative year led by Cllr Sarah Bevan and her ward colleague Cllr Karen Walker (Independent) to keep the community looking clean and tidy.

Karen added: “We’ve been organising community clean-up events on the first Saturday of every month for over a year in different streets in Peasedown St John.

“The response has been fantastic, with large numbers of residents joining us on every occasion.”
