The children of Paulton and the surrounding area have been

mouse-hunting during the school holidays.

The mice have been hiding in public places, and residents’ gardens, hoping to be spotted by the youngsters, adding to their scores and producing a winner.

An event was held on 24th August at Holy Trinity Church in Paulton, and the Great Mouse Trophy was awarded to brothers, Jacob and Isaac, with 227 points. Congratulations to them, and also to the runner-up, who was Kitty, with 226 points – how close was that?!

The prizes were presented by John Cocker, the church clock-winder. John has been doing this job, which entails climbing up the narrow staircase in the tower, every week to wind the clock manually. With the money raised, a new automatic winder will be installed and John will be saved the long climb each week!

Entertainment was provided by Kath Still, who played the accordion and led everyone in a fun singalong while the points were being counted. A barbecue followed, with delicious hotdogs and burgers – not to mention homemade cake. Thank you for such excellent food. This meal was open to all in the community, and a number of families attended this fitting end to the Great Mouse Hunt.

The organisers would like to thank everyone who participated. Over twenty businesses in Paulton displayed mice, as well as many private individuals. A total of £250 was raised towards the cost of the clock restoration fund. Thanks to Kath Still for the fun she provided with her music and singing, and to Kathy Mayley for the wonderful food at the barbecue.
