The SWALLOW Community Café has launched a new Sugar Smart Campaign, making customers aware of the sugar in the café’s menu items, helping them to make healthy choices.

New menus were launched, along with an information display helping to build awareness of the amount of sugar in food and drink. This is part of Sugar Smart Bath & North East Somerset, and has been funded through the Radstock and Westfield Big Local.

Sugar Smart looks at what we can all do at home, in schools, in the community and in food outlets to help people recognise how much sugar is in their food and drink and to provide healthier options. The recommended maximum daily amount of added sugar is 7.5 teaspoons for adults and three-to-six teaspoons for children.

However, both children and adults in the UK are consuming up to three times the recommended amount of added sugar, leading to serious health conditions, such as obesity and diabetes, as well as tooth decay. The charity will be working with its members to help them to become Sugar Smart.
