Since it was formed in 2011, Midsomer Norton Town Council has sought to promote civic pride and a strong sense of community in the town.

One of its growing traditions is the promotion of St George's Day, when Councillors have encouraged businesses to mark the occasion by flying the St George's Cross on April 23rd. This year is no different and with new flag poles being erected over the Town Hall balcony during the winter, the Council hopes that it can take an even stronger lead in

celebrating the occasion.

Cllr Pete Mocock is leading the push for the town to mark the nation's heritage and encourage a patriotic celebration by flying flags on the day. "It seems to be commonplace for the Scottish, Irish and Welsh to celebrate their Patron Saints' days, but patriotism on St George's Day is often lacking. We think we have made Midsomer Norton a welcoming and inclusive place, but it can also be proud of its heritage as an English market town with a rich history.

"It would be wonderful to see a widespread display of St George's Cross flags along the High Street on April 23rd."

The Town Hall's new flagpoles will be busy this summer as the town hosts visitors from Ambarès et Lagrave for the twinning week in August and will fly the Tricolour and Union Flag, as well as marking the Queen's official birthday in June.
