Last week’s Mystery Photograph peaked a lot of interest, and what a brilliant scene it was, taken in Oakhill.

Congratulations to the following for guessing correctly: Julian Brown, Richard Edwards, Robert Wilcox, Alan and Norma Norris, Les Box and Hannah Selway, Eddie Maundrill, Paul Hancock, Janet Gilham.

Many thanks to Walter (Terry) Reakes who said: “This week’s photograph at High Street Oakhill brings back a flood of memories as I lived in this idyllic Mendip village sixty years ago. It was a joy to live there. Nevertheless, like other villages, much has changed as it was mainly a ‘Blue collar’ village with inter alia, a saw mill at the centre of the village with Oakhill Brewery in close proximity, plus a Brewery Malthouse.

“Oakhill Co-op served the village with most residents needs. Oakhill Post Office was a major branch with its own exchange plus a Gas Work, which along with other enterprise’s, made the village very much self sufficient.

“However, there was a socially unjustified side of village life as some of the cottages were not fit for human habitation. Outside taps which froze up in the winter, outside lavatory, flagstone floors which let in the damp...

“People often look at living conditions of villagers in bygone days with ‘rose tinted glasses’. There were certainly no roses around the door of High Street, the cottage my family lived, in fact it was condemned and we moved to a Council house at Sunnymead Little London, first time I had a proper bath, at fifteen years old, bye, bye tin bath, welcome electric light, garden... it was to arrive in paradise.”
