SOMERSET & Dorset Railway are issuing a reminder that the Silver Street location in Midsomer Norton is private properly after a spate of trespassing.

Railway property has been interfered with in recent incidents, with the theft of items which were later found discarded by a local dog walker.

Chairman of the operating company Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway Co Ltd assumes the events are high-jinks by local young people during lighter summer evenings but is warning of the dangers of trespassing.

He said: “Once again, I have to report that we have had incidents of trespass and interference with railway property at the Heritage Railway in Silver Street, Midsomer Norton.

“They really need to be aware that they are trespassing on railway property (and therefore subject to a fine of up to £1,000 if found guilty) but more importantly, they are risking life or serious injury. Trains could appear at any time, unbeknownst to them.

“Additionally the risk of slips, trips and falls is higher in an environment where there is uneven ballast and solid, unforgiving surfaces, such as sleepers and rail, plus other railway infrastructure."

A stash of railway items that had been removed from our site and left in a heap adjacent the footpath above Withies Lane was found by a local dog walker.

Matt added: “What the intention was is unknown, but these are heavy items, which of themselves could cause harm whilst being carried away.

“If whoever it is has energies they wish to work off, then please come up to the station on a Sunday morning and we will do our best to meet their desire!

"But on a serious note, our only concern is that by walking on or about the railway they might get hurt in some way. To restate the message of previous years - Keep off the tracks. They can be dangerous.”
