On 8th August, Norton Radstock u3a members at their Monthly Speaker Meeting were able to enjoy a fascinating talk by Roger Burfit on the Somerset & Dorset Heritage Railway.
The railway is based at the former Midsomer Norton South Station and volunteer railway enthusiasts have spent many years in restoring the station building, signal box and other areas which were present when the station was in operation.
Many older u3a members will remember the station when taking trips to Bournemouth or Bath. The station during the years won many awards for the gardens which were lovingly tendered by railway staff. Who could forget watching and hearing The Pines pass as it raced through Midsomer Norton and Radstock during its hay day?
The Station is now a major tourist attraction for Midsomer Norton and the Trust can look back with pride on how the company and others have adapted to the ever-changing challenges which have been faced. Events such as the operating days, Galas and Santa Specials were all successful. Roger highlighted the key projects which the groups hoped to achieve or make further progress with in the next twelve months.
An excellent presentation which was thoroughly enjoyed by members and Roger is sure to be invited back to speak with the u3a again soon.
The speaker for the September meeting on 12th September from 2pm will be Rachel Boothroyd who will speak about the fascinating subject of gemstones, particularly the best and little-known gemstones and introduce members to gemstone testing. Subject to time restraints members are invited to bring along pieces of jewellery for valuation which could prove interesting.
There is still time for members to book for the popular trip to Bath Races on 31st August. The coach will leave South Road car park at 12 noon. The first race is at 2.10 pm with the last race at 5.15 pm. Immediately after racing we shall travel to the Old Down Inn at Chilcompton for the usual group meal which is always an enjoyable social occasion. Late bookings can be accepted by phoning: 01761 413414.
Colin Tincknell OBE, Chairman Norton Radstock u3a.
