Members of the U3A are looking forward to getting up and running, safely of course, over the coming months. On the 30th April a postal AGM approved the accounts and voted in a new committee, who will now get to grips with the task of re-starting the organisation.
The new Chairman, Colin Tincknell OBE, has in fact done the job before so it is good to have an experienced hand at the wheel. He says: “I did not expect to do this job again, but needs must, and I am looking forward to it. The U3A means University of the Third Age, but the title is a bit of a challenge. Firstly, we are not a University, but a community who has come together to ‘learn, laugh and live’. No qualifications are sought or offered, and learning is for its own sake.
“What we do is decided by the members, so rambling, Psychology, garden visits, bird watching, photography, poetry, chess, art and much more. What we do is what our members want. The ‘Third Age’ is also a little misleading, for there is no age limit, and it is open to all who have ceased full-time employment.
“Norton Radstock U3A is raring to go. 360 members have stuck with us over the recent difficult times and though some activities have had to cease, others have carried on via ZOOM and other digital means.
“Many groups will soon start again, though we are determined to do so safely, and I hope we will get back to our coffee mornings and speaker meetings as soon as possible. So, we hope to meet soon, and if anyone has something they think others might like to explore, please come and join in.”
