The next Bath and North East Somerset Council Give and Take Day will take place at the Somer Community Centre, Gullock Tyning, Midsomer Norton, on Saturday, 18th May from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The Council urgently requires volunteers from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. to help out. All volunteers will have first choice of donated items that come in on the day and a free roll of food-waste caddy liners.

Give and Take Days are a great way for residents to get rid of reusable items they no longer need and take things that they do need, all for free. At previous events, residents have donated a range of fantastic items, including bicycles, sets of golf clubs, an inflatable swimming pool, brand new baby clothing and musical instruments. The aim of the day is to reduce the amount of unwanted household items ending up in landfill and costing the local taxpayer money in landfill charges, as well as reducing the amount of harmful gases being released into the atmosphere.

All residents need to do is bring along their unwanted reusable items (not broken or electrical) and donate them at the Somer Community Centre from 9 a.m. with the last donation accepted at 12 noon. Accepted items will be small enough to fit into an average-sized family car.

Badged volunteers will receive, check and sort your items on the day. Anyone is free to browse the collection of donations and take away items, although the Council is encouraging people not to take away more than ten items.

The Council's Waste Campaigns Team will be on hand to offer advice on the new small electrical collection, Recycling Centre Resident's Permits, reducing household waste and home composting. Now is a perfect time for growing – the Council are encouraging residents to donate and swap plants at this event, so if you have any houseplants or any extra vegetable or garden plants, please bring them along. You may even have some extra seeds you can donate.

The Somer Valley Foodbank and Curo Sustainability Forum group will also be at the event, so guests can find out more about their local projects.

Items accepted on the day are as follows: toys, bicycles and books, clothes and reusable linen, e.g. sheets, curtains, DVDs and CDs, gardenware and tools, bric-a-brac, plants (if you divide any plants and don't know what to do with them, please bring them along to this event).

Things that cannot be accepted are: electrical items, hazardous or toxic items e.g. paint, foam furniture (sofas, chairs, duvets, pillows), gas appliances, broken or damaged items, tools requiring safety equipment, no bulky items, such as cupboards or wardrobes, no videos and no baby equipment – prams, car safety seats, bouncers, etc.
