The fourth Somer Valley Walking Festival, held on 13th and 14th September, was blessed by cloudless skies as walkers from the area and beyond as far as Weymouth enjoyed explorations of the beautiful landscapes and industrial and other heritage of the area.

On Friday, 13th, Deborah Porter of Cam Valley Wildlife Trust fascinated an audience in the Radstock Museum with an illustrated talk on the local animal, bird, plant and insect life.

This was followed on the Saturday by walks around the built-up environment of Paulton, Radstock, Haydon and Westfield; a countryside walk around Paulton and a walk from Peasedown incorporating a stop at the Priston Festival to enjoy the music.

The flawless weather continued on Sunday morning, when walkers set out on longer expeditions, including a visit to the charming Cameley church (the “Rip van Winkle of churches” according to John Betjeman). There was also a walk in the countryside surrounding Timsbury and a nature walk to the Haydon Local Nature Reserve.

The weekend was rounded off by a shorter walk around Paulton, followed by tea and cakes at Paulton Rovers’ ground, the base for Sunday’s events.

It was wonderful to see so many people out and about discovering our countryside and its rich heritage, and I would like to thank all the walk leaders and others who gave up their time to help.

We are always open to offers to lead walks in the future and also suggestions for themed walks. Do get in touch with me on: [email protected] if you have ideas for future Festivals.
