Writhlington Flower Show committee have been busy preparing, and looking forward to the Annual Flower Show and Fete on Saturday, 20th August. After an absence of two years, this much loved and missed village event will make a welcome return. The Flower Show committee are pleased and delighted, to be presented with a trophy from the family of the late Bill Packer.

Mr Packer, Bill as I was always told to call him, (being of the old school, old habits of not calling my elders Mr and Mrs comfortably) lived in the village all his life was a past committee member, life president and lifelong supporter and exhibitor of the flower show. He was an avid gardener, growing vegetables and flowers to a high show standard, exhibiting not only at Writhlington Flower Show, but took an interest in other village shows and exhibited at Timsbury Flower Show, the North Somerset Chrysanthemum and Dahlia Society, the Frome Cheese Show with great success.

He had a great love of flowers and the new trophy will be the Bill Packer Memorial Trophy for the best exhibit in the flower section. The committee would like to thank the Packer family for their kindness, generosity, and continued support. If you have taken up any new hobbies, or crafts, or indeed, gardening during lockdown, we would love to see your work. Just take a look at the schedule.

We have classes for all the family, and some new ones to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Schedules are available from Premier Stores, Writhlington, Radstock Cooperative Society, Thomson’s Hardware, Fromeway Inn, Filler up, Radstock Library, Faulkland Inn, and Falkland Lavendar Farm.

The 133rd Flower Show and Fete will be opened by our show president Mrs Hilary Denning, at 2.30pm. The Mendip Brass Band will provide the music for the afternoon, between 3pm and 4pm and John Griffin will be in action with his ‘funky’ puppet show.

He makes a welcome return, loved not only by the parents, and grandparents, but obviously the children too. This is free and not to be missed. The flower show has for many years, supported the promotion of the bees and bee keeping. We welcome back the Mendip Beekeepers Association, and they will be on hand to answer questions and give advice to anyone interested in bees and bee keeping. I’m told you can do some yummy honey tasting, or purchase some honey, I’ll be doing both!

For anyone wishing to give archery a try, or find out more about South Wansdyke Archery Club, they will be at St. Mary’s School field, where they meet weekly to practise. They are supported by Team GB, and have some talented young archers, and also support wheelchair archers. Come and have a taster session, you might find a new hobby.

We have our own mini Commonwealth game races for children, with free entry 4pm to 5pm. Medals and certificates for the winners.

New to us is Addicted2Agility, dog displays, and have a go sessions. Bring your dog(s) and have a go.

We have a free sand pit for kids. There will be a small history, and old photo display in the village hall. Tea and homemade cakes, many more stalls, bouncy castle, football game, grand summer draw, lots to do and lots to see.

The committee welcome and would love to see anyone who has had past connections with us over the years. From past presidents, chairman, secretary’s, committee members, their families, and friends, come to join us on the day to catch up with old friends, enjoy a cup of tea, and reminisce of times past.
