It seems that the phrase, 'Absence makes the heart grow fonder' is as true in some quarters today as it was when it was first coined. At least for the people who attended or entered Midsomer Norton Grammar School in the 1950s and early 1960s.
For the past ten years, many former pupils in this category have come together annually from near and far at one or other of the hotels or inns in the district, and every year there is no lack of topics to talk about. Not necessarily the things that put many people off such a get-together (e.g. health, career successes or the achievements of the offspring), but simply school day reminiscences, filling in the blanks where someone missed what was happening in different classes or events, discovering how people known in their teens have progressed along life's pathway, or just refreshing failing memories of past days!
So, if you qualify for this reunion but have never been along, or have lost touch with the organisers, then this is your chance to bring a smile to your face when you meet up with old school friends and talk about the 'good old days'; those days when we never thought much about the 'pound in our pocket' or the tensions across the Iron Curtain. Perhaps we were naïve, but our world was the school and our main concern was how to work our way through it without too much aggravation on anyone's part – academically or on the sports field.
If you haven't already registered and want to have a thoroughly enjoyable evening at the next reunion on Saturday, 12th September at the Old Down Inn, then email Trevor Dury at: [email protected]">[email protected] or phone Tony Tompkins on: 01327 857480.
Speaking this week, Organiser, Trevor Dury, said: "I lived at Midsomer Norton in my school days and went to Midsomer Norton Grammar School myself between 1955 and 1963, but I now live in Switzerland.
"However, my time at school was so important to me that I would like to encourage as many people as possible to join us at our reunions, to which I travel every year."
