If you enjoyed the recent coronation of the King and Queen, did you know that we have our own coronation right here annually in Midsomer Norton?

The parade isn’t quite on the same scale, and the budget is smaller than the coronation of King Charles, but it’s a Midsomer Norton Carnival tradition which dates back to 1948.

The Illuminated Carnival is experiencing growth, which requires the existing team to concentrate on the procession and other crucial aspects of organising one of the most significant community events in the area. Despite this, the team would like to preserve their carnival royalty for future generations. Hence, they are reaching out to the local community for support to ensure its survival.

The team are looking for individuals to organise the annual coronation of the ‘carnival royalty’; the role is to coordinate the carnival royalty competition, which takes place in September every year. Volunteering doesn’t require a massive commitment as the majority of the role can be done in your spare time from home with support and assistance provided whenever necessary.

The carnival chairman said, “This really is a unique opportunity, we’re one of the very few Somerset carnivals left with carnival royalty and its totally inclusive with two age groups for both local boys and girls to enter, it’s a big part of carnival tradition and countless young people have enjoyed the experience over the years.”

“It’s my real hope that one of these previous royals that have since grown up and perhaps have their own children would be willing to come forward and help save the tradition, or indeed anyone else who wants to help, you don’t need any special skills or experience.”

Whoever volunteers will be sure of a very warm welcome from the friendly team, who are a small and varied bunch. You’ll have the chance to make new friends and inspire the younger generation in the community.

Further details about the carnival royalty can be found on the Illuminated Carnival website: www.illuminatedcarnival.co.uk.
