Young musicians from Bath and North East Somerset took part in a world premiere at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday this week.

The 150 musicians, representing almost every secondary school in the area, took part in the Schools’ Prom, organised by Music for Youth.

They are all members of The Bath and North East Somerset Music Hub and were joined by musicians from Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire Music Hubs.

They performed a piece called ‘A Shakespearean Triptych’, a special commission by Philip Harper written for a choir of over 400 voices and wind band of around 150 players. The performers have been rehearsing since September and came together for the first time on Sunday, 6th November, for a mass rehearsal at the Pavilion in Bath.

Tallis Inger Flecker, from Writhlington School, has also won a competition and had her composition played as part of the performance at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday.

Cllr Michael Evans, Bath and North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “This is a first for young musicians from our area – they have never before performed en masse at the Royal Albert Hall. We’re incredibly proud of this achievement and it was an extraordinary day that will remain with many pupils for a very long time.”
