One local resident has expressed concerns over drivers' ignorance to changes in the Highway Code.

There are many motorists in the Midsomer Norton area who are apparently still unaware of the changes made to the Highway Code a year ago.

Specifically I refer to the rules that affect motorists turning into or leaving a side road. Rule H2 of the Highway code makes it quite clear that pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross the road have right of way, and motorists, whether turning into the side road or leaving it, should stop to let them pass in safety. Not to do so is a traffic offence:

Rule H2 - Rule for drivers, motorcyclists, horse drawn vehicles, horse riders and cyclists -

At a junction you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning.

I have witnessed (and myself experienced) many occasions where there has been a near collision between a motorist and a pedestrian crossing Excelsior Terrace at the junction with the High Street, and likewise at the junction of South Street and Silver Street, because the motorist concerned seems blissfully unaware of this rule, or possibly considers him or herself above it. The junction of Charlton Road and A361 is another place where crossing the road is very tricky for the same reason. Sooner or later someone is going to get hurt.

Motorists, in your own interests please refresh your knowledge of the current Highway Code - there have been many changes that you need to respect in order to avoid injury (or possibly even death) at your hands.
