Heavy rain created unpleasant conditions for members of the Fosseway Seniors Golf Section during the quarter-finals of the Guerwyn Thomas Trophy, but all four matches managed to finish. Emphasising once again the unpredictability of the sport, three of the top four qualifying pairs from the previous week failed to make the last four.

Geoff Hallett and Pete Fitch, who led the field after the qualifiers, were beaten 3&2 by Cyril Blacker and Rod Bruce and Bill Lester and Frank Reeves met a similar fate at the hands of an inspired pairing of Denis White and Geoff Weeks. Allen Cheney and Malcolm Tucker were beaten 3&1 by Brian Phelps and Bob Smith. The only survivors from the top four were John Wighton and George Underwood. In the most enthralling contest of the day, they were taken to the second play-off hole before disposing of Mike Ricketts and Howard Nowell.

Three of the Winter League quarter-finals have also been played. There were further successes for Wighton and Smith. The former beat Ricketts 4&3, while Smith came out on top by a similar score against Chris Ellam. Hallett and Tucker were involved in the closest contest, with Hallett beating the reigning champion on the first play-off hole. The one remaining quarter-final to be played sees Lester facing Fitch.

This Thursday, the January Medal is scheduled to take place and members are reminded that it will be followed by the AGM.
