It has been a disappointing week for the Mid-Somerset Football League. The pick of the league's side lost on the artificial pitch at Bridgwater Academy 3–2 to the Weston-super-Mare league and Purnell Reserves, the league's last remaining club in the Somerset County Cup, lost 3–0 to Weston Zoyland in the Intermediate Cup.
The league side, put together by Les Allen and Neil Craddock, played very well throughout the game, but were caught out by three breakaway goals. The second was a bizarre affair – a terrific shot by a Weston forward that hit the underside of the bar, and came out into the field of play. The referee waved play on and to everyone's surprise, the assistant, who was nowhere near the goal line, gave a goal.
Goals from Ocean Gould and Darren Gibbs (penalty) got Mid-Somerset back in the game, but for all the pressing at the end, they could not get the goal they deserved to take the game to penalties.
Last Friday was the league's first Cup Final. It was the Baxter Shield between Baltonsborough and Chew Magna Reserves, played at Radstock Town's Ground and what a great advert it was for the lower Divisions. Baltonsborough came out on top, winning 2–0, with both goals coming from terrific free kicks by Man of the Match, Aiden Willis, the first one in the first half beating the Chew goalkeeper all ends up and the second in the second half coming off the head of Sam Edmonds.
The result of the day last Saturday was Farrington Reserves' 2–1 win at home in the Charity Cup against Premier League high flyers and KO Cup finalists, Stoke Rovers. Alex Short, for Farrington, beat the visitors' goalkeeper to the ball to score the first goal and Neil Radnedge tapped the ball home after a mix-up in the Stoke defence following a corner. This win capped a great week for Farrington after receiving the league's Respect Award from the Somerset FA on Wednesday.
Victoria came to Radstock A to play them in the semi-final of the Paulton Hospital Cup and ran out 4–0 winners with a great hat-trick from the visitors' top goalscorer, Dan Linham, with a fourth from Luke Lang. They now play Coleford in the final on Good Friday at Paulton Rovers' ground at 11 a.m.
Camerton had a good win away at Timsbury, 4–1 in the Clark Cup. They are away to Peasedown Reserves in the semi-final on April 4th.
In the Premier League, champions and undefeated Coleford ended Meadow Rangers' six games without a defeat at Westfield, winning 4–0. Frome Collegians just managed to overcome Peasedown Reserves away, 3–2, to go back to the top spot in the league and High Littleton continue their good run, recording a 4–2 win at home to Westfield A.
In the Third Division, Somer Valley move into second place after winning away to Saltford Reserves, 1–0.
