Wells Golf Club has had reason to celebrate this week with the news that Junior Captain, Josh Higgs, has received an England call-up.
Josh has been selected for the National Under-16 Development Squad. This is just reward for all the time, effort and practice that he puts in, not to mention the continual support and encouragement from his parents and the Wells coaching team. Wells Golf Club and its members are very proud of Josh and will be eagerly following his future successes.
Although not quite on a national scale, the Wells Avalon League Team, led by Jason Huck, have also given us something to celebrate, by once again topping their division with the highest average points for the season in all seven divisions, thereby retaining the Shackleford Shield and securing promotion to the Fourth Division for 2015.
A successful season was also reported at the Seniors' AGM in that the Seniors team had sixteen wins and seven draws in the friendly matches played this summer. In the more competitive Seniors County Scratch and Bowl competitions, the club lost narrowly, 3–2, in both semi-finals.
Over £1,250 has been raised by the section towards the Club Captain's charity, Riding for the Disabled. The 2015 Seniors Captain is Peter Leverick, with Dave Hayward elected as Vice-Captain.
The Ladies Section celebrated the successes of their teams during the year, with an end of season Bowmaker Waltz. Glynis Slater and Cath Levell won, with an astonishing 71 points, followed by Sandy Heath and Caroline Nolder. In third place were Doreen Douglas and Tina Davies. Kathy Lane and Barbara Harris were awarded the 'booby' prize, presented to remind everyone it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Sandy Heath, Alliance Captain, thanked members who had played in the Alliance team for their efforts, which were rewarded by staying in the same division, despite stiff opposition. Jill Bocquet, Interleague Captain, congratulated her team players for their hard work and looked forward to playing new venues next year. Gill Magrath, Friendlies Captain, said overall they had a successful season, winning all the home matches. Magrath and Bocquet are continuing to lead teams next year, while Heath is handing the baton on to Jen Jones.
