TEMPLE Cloud Cricket Club is preparing for a landmark moment in its history as September will see the club host its first ever women’s fixture.
The match marks the beginning of a new chapter, with a growing squad of local players eager to represent Temple Cloud at senior women’s level for the very first time.
Club officials say the women’s side has been steadily building momentum over the past year, with regular training sessions and increasing community interest.
“It’s fantastic to see so many players stepping forward,” said a club spokesperson. “This first fixture is not just about one game, but about laying foundations for the future. We want to provide genuine opportunities for women and girls in our area to play competitive cricket.
”The pioneering side is expected to feature a mix of experienced cricketers and newcomers, with the emphasis firmly on participation, development, and enjoyment. Supporters are being urged to turn out in numbers for what promises to be a historic and celebratory occasion.
rOn the men’s side, Temple Cloud’s unbeaten run in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier Cricket League came to an abrupt end at Ilminster, where the hosts secured a commanding 96-run victory on a sweltering summer afternoon.
Winning the toss on a dry, turning surface, Ilminster chose to bat first and posted 167 all out. The innings was held together by Adeesha Nanayakkara, who compiled a composed 73 in difficult conditions. For Temple Cloud, Andrew Mortimer starred with the ball, claiming an excellent 5 for 28, while Gary Filer’s miserly 2 for 19 from 10 overs kept the pressure on. Dave Filer also chipped in with a pair of wickets.
Chasing 168, Temple Cloud’s batting faltered under Ilminster’s spin assault. The uneven bounce and sharp turn proved too much as wickets fell at regular intervals. Unable to build meaningful partnerships, Temple Cloud were bundled out for just 71 – their lowest total of the season.
The result ends Temple Cloud’s unbeaten streak but sets up an intriguing finale to the season, with one match left to play. Ilminster, meanwhile, take confidence from a clinical all-round performance heading into their final fixture.
