The Toolstation Western League is using the current lockdown to celebrate the contribution made by the games unsung heroes, without whom Clubs would not survive.
This week the League are celebrating the contribution Simon Wilkinson has made to Radstock Town Football Club.
Club Stalwart, Dave Wilkinson, nominated Simon: “Taking on the Chairman’s role when the Club was struggling to survive. Simon’s been the Club secretary, groundsman, maintenance man, barman, dressing room cleaner and laundry man. He’s even been photographed for a Club fund-raising calendar, marking the pitch, in nothing but his wellies! In fact, there isn’t much he hasn’t done, apart from playing of course and he’d probably do that if asked!”
His efforts have led to a turn in the Club’s fortunes.”
Former Somer Valley FM sports presenter, Ian Nockolds, cites his relationship with Simon as one of the main reasons he decided to start the Western League Podcast.
“Radstock Town is one of the best Clubs in non-league football, let alone the Western League”, Ian said, “and Simon is a huge part of that. He’s a very generous, welcoming man, as is Dave. Its not just me, I know many people across the League think very highly of Radstock as a Club and the Wilkinson’s are a huge part of that.”
The Western League started their Unsung Hero campaign to celebrate what’s best about the game of football, at a time when so much publicity is focused on the negative impact the Coronavirus pandemic is having on society.
