Welton Rovers made the short journey to Bishop Sutton on Saturday, and although still unbeaten, they will kick themselves for an under-par performance that allowed the hosts to share the points with a last-gasp equaliser.
Welton had the better of the early exchanges, and Jaiden Savery was found in space to the right of the Sutton goal, but his first time effort flew high and wide of the target.
Bishop Sutton’s first real attack of the game came in the twentieth minute, when good play from Sam Downes saw him waltz through a static Welton defence and set up Mason Daggar, who calmly slotted the ball past Welton keeper, Tom Drewitt, and into the far corner of the net, giving Sutton a surprising lead.
Welton responded, and just after the half-hour were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Sutton penalty area.
Up stepped Charlie Babb, who drilled his shot low, through the edge of the wall and into the corner of the net to equalise for Welton and score his third goal in as many matches.
Welton took the lead on the 39th minute, after Lewis Coleman was pulled back to the right of the Sutton area. The free kick was delivered perfectly into the mix and Savery was on hand to poke it in from close range.
The second half saw Welton searching for more goals. However, so often, the play was disrupted by poor choices and passes. In truth, the Sutton keeper was rarely troubled.
An effort from Coleman went wide, as did a header from Tom Smith. Welton rang the changes, as the half progressed with all three substitutes being used. However, the all important third goal wouldn’t come, and as the minutes ticked by, the hosts realised they could get something out of the game.
Drewitt saved well with his legs to deny Adam Young. It was Young who broke the hearts of the large numbers of the travelling Green Army, when on the stroke of full time, he met a cross from the left flank and his stunning first-time volley flew into the Welton net to equalise for Bishop Sutton.
