Welton got back to winning ways with a gritty team performance against their visitors from Calne.
Welton were straight on the pace from the kick-off, and won a corner on the right; a quality delivery from Callum Elms saw the ball met by Lewis Coleman, and his header from six yards out had goal written all over it until Calne keeper, Cameron Shipway, pulled off a top class save to deny the youngster.
However, Welton were not to be denied for long, and with five minutes gone, Chris Pile was found in space on the right – he raced towards goal and fired in a low shot that flew past Shipway and into the Calne net.
Welton continued to dominate the game and were rewarded with a second goal in the 25th minute, when good play from Shakiel Green saw him set up Joe Batterick on a charge and he volleyed home past the helpless Shipway, much to the delight of the Green Army.
The visitors responded to these early setbacks and Welton Captain, Joe Garland, was on hand with a great last minute tackle to deny Jamel Chevolleau and Welton keeper, Tom Drewitt, was called into action as he produced a top drawer diving save to deny Chevolleau.
The visitors were creating the early chances in the second half, as Welton appeared to have taken their foot off the pedal. Rory Worthington went close with a low shot for Calne. Welton Manager, Clive Scott, brought on Mallick Jammeh and Jaiden Savery to liven things up. Jammeh’s first touch was a cracking shot that flew over the Calne bar.
Jammeh was brought down on the edge of the area and the subsequent kick rattled the Calne bar, dropping straight down and was somehow cleared from the goal line. With ten minutes remaining, Jammeh was upended in the Calne penalty area. He took the spot kick himself, and drilled it straight down the middle to score Welton’s third and seal the points. On the stroke of full-time, Garland was found in the area and his power header was goal-bound until Shipway somehow got his hands to it to deny Welton a fourth goal.
