MENDIP Golf Club’s Avalon A team have now concluded their season. Away to Vivary, always a difficult fixture, they came away with a narrow 2-3 defeat, with points coming from Mark Necker/Phil Leadbeater and Dan Allen/Tom Chapman.
This was followed by another close match going down to Oake Manor away. This time wins came from Dan Allen/Jack Cook and Tom Chapman/Spencer Pocock.
Finally despite having to give many shots to higher handicapped opponents, a halved match with Worlebury with points from Spencer Pocock/Tom Chapman, Dan Allen/Jack Cook and with a half from Rob Edney/Paul Lewis. This all resulted in the team finishing third in the division, a good result following the previous year’s promotion.
The annual Lady Captains versus Vice Captains match fell foul of the weather and will be played at a later date. However enjoying much better weather, well suited to the theme, the Lady Captain’s Day was a great success with its Hawaiian theme. There were three trophies being played for on the day.
The Cooper Goblet went to Aimee Sawyer, the Gladys Shepherd Trophy to Helen Roberts and the Optimist Cup to Chris Williams. The best individual score on the day was from Helen Roberts with an excellent 44 points with Karen Cookson 2nd with 42. The team prize went to Fran Davies, Rebecca Edwards and young Lauren Morris.
The Ladies Alliance B team under the captaincy of Maureen Charlton had a shaky start but as the season has progressed and more players became available, results greatly improved with the latest, a fine 12 - 2 win over Saltford, with wins from Pauline Young, Jane Ball, Maureen Charlton, Anita Butcher and Chris Down and with halved matches from Carol King and Fran Davies.
With a far greater number of players to call from than in recent years, the team can look forward with optimism to a successful season next year.
The final Wednesday Social evening saw 35 playing. Bearing in mind this was a new venture for Mendip, what a success it has proved. The latest winners were Charlotte and Pete Hoddinott playing with Isobel and Paul Panton who carded a net 33.
The Final of the Seniors Harry Bowles KO has now taken place, appropriately between two players in very good form this season, with the winner being Tony Scott who edged out Tony Taylor by a single hole - well done to both Tonys.
The Seniors had a resounding 5-1 win over Clevedon with wins from Bryan Lewis/Simon Atkinson, Paul Godwin/Alan Edwards, Paul Woood/Martin Sutherland, Roland Greenway/David Judge and Antony George/Peter Rummings.
And finally a full start sheet competed for the Seniors Centenary Cup. Div 1 went to John Parham with 37 on count back from Steve Davis with Phillip Bissett 3rd with 36. Div 2 was won by Tony Scott with 40, John Hugill was 2nd with 37 and Eric Jordan was 3rd on count back with 36. Div 3 went to Robert Berry with 38 on count back from James Blackstock with Richard Evans 3rd with 35 after count back. However, the trophy went to a magnificent round of 42 from Darrin Vowell.
