Oh, what a chilly end to the season our members had on Sunday when they gathered at the clubhouse for Captain’s Day.

As usual for one of our special club games we had a great turnout and the atmosphere on the green was definitely warmer than the weather - which saw several layers being added to our top halves and quite a few blue knees for those brave souls who turned up in shorts. Overall, it was a great game enjoyed by all who took part, with the possible exception of Nigel who had to retire due to a bad back. Old age comes to us all Nigel! Hope you’re soon better. Thanks to Janet who, although not a bowler, stood in for Nigel. Well done Janet. I’ll have your membership form ready.

It was certainly a momentous day for our new bowlers, Jane and Ray Hand. Jane and Ray only started at the beginning of this year but they both managed to get a trophy. Ray was top man while Jane took the ladies much coveted wooden spoon. Our best lady was our junior bowler, Chloe Holmes and the men’s wooden spoon went to Chris Brown.

The Spider competition was won by Mike Firth who took the bottle of wine and the proceeds will go to the Visually Impaired Bowlers Charity. Well done to all our winners.

The trophies were presented by Merv, our Vice President, who stood in at the last minute as our, President, Cilla has been struck with the dreaded bug. Great job Merv and good practice for your presidency next year. Get well soon Cilla, it’s not quite time to hand over to Merv yet.

Thanks go to our ladies, Mary, Sue and Lin who laid on a sumptuous buffet which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thanks also to all the bar staff, to Pat for sorting out the brilliant array of raffle prizes, to Paul who organised us all and to everyone else who leant a hand.

And finally, one last very big thank you from me to whoever turned the heaters on! NH
