Norton Radstock Swimming Club were privileged to welcome special guests, Midsomer Norton Mayor, Paul Myers, and Paralympian, IPC World/European and Commonwealth champion swimmer, Stephanie Millward to the Annual Disco and Presentation evening held at Paulton Rovers FC. Also in attendance were honoured Life Members, Dennis Barter, Kay Harvey, and London 2012 Olympian, Stacey Tadd.
The mayor presented certificates and medals to all the finalists from the club's annual gala held last November. He also presented Stacey, with her UKCC Level Two Coaching certificate, which she achieved with the help of a grant from Midsomer Norton Town Council.
The winners were presented with their cups by Paralympian, Stephanie Millward. There were also trophies for the most improved swimmers across a range of strokes and distances. Georgia Boulton received the Junior Victor Ludorum and Liam Willcox won the senior award for the highest number of first places. Katie Ball was awarded the Endeavour Cup for her commitment to volunteering on poolside. Awards for the most improved times went to Elliot Lewis, Daniel Milverton, Hannah Brooks-Scully, Katie Boby, Jessica Pinches and Georgia Vause.
Following the presentations, swimmers took the opportunity to get Stephanie's autograph and be photographed with her medals and Olympic torch. This was so inspiring for all the swimmers and made the evening a memorable occasion.
In recognition of the help and support received from the club, Stacey kindly donated one of her personalised London 2012 Team GB hats signed by Rebecca Adlington and other swimming stars. The hat was raffled for club funds and the lucky winners were Katie and Rosie Boby.
Workforce development is a priority to ensure a meaningful volunteering experience for the clubs team of committed volunteers. Our thanks goes to the Midsomer Norton Town Council for providing grants to fund teacher development and an officials training programme.
Over the past year, Nick Britton, Nicky Vause and Kay and Liam Willcox have qualified as Judge Twos. Between them, they have had the opportunity to officiate at the British Championships, the Special Olympics held in Bath last summer, the SW Disability Championships, County and other open meets and galas. Phil Ball qualified as a Judge One and six more trainees are near to completing theirs. Alice Bowden
and Hannah Brookes-Scully qualified as UKCC Level 1 Teaching Assistants.
Swimmers are also encouraged to apply for both
regional and national development programmes. Sam Church, Caitlin Glover and Hannah Brooks-Scully completed the SW Young Volunteers Programme. This year, five more candidates have been selected from the club. Norton Hill PE A level student, Sam Church, has been selected to join Somerset's Young Coaches Programme. The club has also supported Dan Milverton, Connie Glover and Olivia Shepard who are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme.
Club Captain, Liam Willcox, completed the National Young Coaches Academy Progamme. This led to him being selected by the ASA as only one of eight in the country to take part in a pilot National Young Officials Academy. This has been a fantastic year for Liam in which he also qualified as a UKCC Level Two Teacher and was named Wesport 2013 Young Volunteer of the Year following a nomination from Somerset ASA President, Fiona Bowen, for his services to aquatics.
The club wishes to thank all those who helped make the evening a great success.
