Having had to abandon the 2013 Sanders Challenge during play last October due to foul weather and the greens becoming flooded after play had commenced, the Mixed Section played for 2013's Sanders Challenge Bowl on Sunday, 2nd February. Golfers were blessed with a rare combination – blue skies and a dry day. Conditions were perfect.
Twenty pairs competed for the trophy in a Chinese Greensomes format, whereby both players tee off, choose the best tee shot, after which, gentleman take the second shot on even numbered holes and ladies take the tee shot on odd numbered holes and the pair alternates shots until the ball is holed out. The first five and twelfth hole were closed, casualties of the never-ending wettest January on record, so the competition was played over twelve holes.
June and Steve Symonds won the trophy, with 26
Stableford points, Shane Phelps and Terri O'Shea came second, with 25 Stableford points, Liz and Paul Thomas and Bobby Appleby and Phil Thompson came third and fourth respectively, with 24 points on countback.
Shane Phelps won the gentlemen's nearest the pin in two on the fourteenth hole and Suzanne Young won the ladies' nearest the pin on the fifteenth hole.
Farrington Park Ladies
It was exhilarating being able to play eighteen holes of golf without a drop of rain on Sunday, 2nd February, when 46 ladies took part in a fun competition, a Four Ball Bowmaker, with the best three scores to count on each hole off 7/8th handicap.
Sandra Blair, Maureen Tayler, Victoria Watts and Carol Jones came first, with 102 points. Didi Ager, Lesley Stone, Gillian Seaward and Pauline Young (as ghost) came second, with 100 points. Ang Hudd, Sharman Bradshaw, Maureen Charlton and Pauline Young came third, with 98 points.
Farrington Park Seniors
The Farrington Park Seniors weather pundit set the scene for the day when he advised members that we had enjoyed sixteen inches of rain in the past three months, the highest since 1914, so it was testament to the course's drainage capabilities that the weekly competition could be staged over twelve holes. The competition took the format of the ever-popular Texas Scramble and although wet underfoot, no rain fell at all – a further record for January!
Winner of Nearest the Pin Competition: 8th Ken Hutton, 14th Mike Henton, 15th Rob Chapple.
Texas Scramble Results: 1st, Phil Thompson, Roger Stone and John Richardson, 40.75, 2nd, Jim Farmer, Eric Nott and Malcolm Brooks, 41.63, 3rd, Bob Baker, Tim Waller and Douglas Nash, 42.5 (countback), 4th, Rob Chapple, Mo Duery and Geoff Skyrme, 42.5.
