From the outset of the game, Norton’s back row trio of Button, Denning and Rose carried the ball well, as did the backs; Taylor, Jeffery and Abbott, but the team were unable to break the Avonmouth defence.

Neither side were able to get the upper hand, until a poor clearance kick gifted Avonmouth an easy try.

Avonmouth’s confidence was boosted by this score, and they quickly scored a second try, this one converted, taking the score to 0–12.

Norton’s forwards started to get a grip on the game, gaining field position and producing some good go forward ball. In one attack, fly half Abbott carried the ball towards the Avonmouth line. Having been tackled, he released the ball for the forwards, who carried it closer to the posts, and quickly recycled, the ball was fed to winger, Schuster, who scored an easy try on the twenty-five-minute mark.

Five minutes later, Abbott again carried strongly; setting up a maul, the forwards drove for the line, which allowed number eight, Rose, to stretch out and place the ball over the line. This levelled the score, then Taylor kicked the conversion to take the lead.

Norton’s pack was missing front row player, prop Edgell, due to injury, but it still produced a strong scrummage, putting huge pressure on Avonmouth and even won ball against the head, when Williams out-hooked his opposite number. This forward power allowed the home team to take their two-point lead, 14–12, into the break.

Now playing with the slope and wind, Norton set about playing in the Avonmouth half, with the visitors on the back foot. Ten minutes into the half, the constant pressure from the home side allowed Gimson to produce a big gap, which allowed Mattick to score under the posts. With the conversion added, the home side now had a comfortable nine-point lead.

The pressure off, the whole side settled down and produced an entertaining half for the crowd, with some great off-loads and powerful forward drives.

With ten minutes to go, Captain Tom Fear extended the lead when he rolled out of a tackle to score; again the extra points were taken. With the win secured, Norton took an easy three points when awarded a penalty ten metres from the try line.

This was probably the team’s best performance of the season, and a good 29–12 win, against a team two places higher in the league.
