The home side started the brighter of the two teams, trying to spread the ball wide, which allowed them to collect the first points of the game with a try in the corner.

Norton’s forwards started to get into the game, keeping the ball tight and depriving Chosen Hill’s possession. This pressure produced a line-out on the 22 metre line. After the ball was caught by Knight, the pack set up a strong drive taking the game up to the five metre line. With a ruck set up, prop Jenner picked and drove to score Norton’s first try. Rideout added the extra points.

The back row of Denning, Button and Clark carried the ball well, linking with Schuster, Mattick and Jeffery taking the game to the home side. A kick ahead by Rideout was chased down by Herrin, who touched down just before the ball went out of the dead ball area, collecting the second of Norton’s tries. Again, the conversion was added, taking the score to 5–14.

Norton now seemed to sit back on their laurels, taking their foot off the pedal. This allowed the lively Chosen Hill team to get back into the game, and score three tries with only another Rideout penalty in reply.

Norton did have chances that were squandered, the best being a drive from the lineout which the referee adjudged to have been blocked illegally, but it was the number of unforced errors and balls stripped in the tackle that kept Chosen Hill in the game. The half ended with the home side having a five-point lead, 22–17.

Chosen Hill carried their momentum into the second half, quickly scoring three more tries, taking them into what seemed to be an unassailable 22-point lead.

After not being in the game for twenty minutes, Norton decided to start playing rugby again, putting together some good attacking play. Centre, Mattick, was the first to benefit from this increased energy, and Rideout again added the conversion.

In the last few minutes of the game, another attack was stopped by Chosen Hill right on line, but from the resulting five metre scrummage, Number 8, J. Rose, picked up and drove over to score, with Rideout again converting for the extra points.

A penalty closed the gap to eight points, and Norton had all the energy with Chosen Hill seemingly out on their feet. Hunting the win, Captain Fear scored a try, reducing the deficit further, but the clock was against them, giving the home side the win.

Although disappointed with the 39–36 loss, Norton claimed two bonus points, knowing that this was a game that had got away.
