The Farrington Park Ladies Club Championship, a Stroke Play Competition, was held over two days on the weekend of 6th and 7th June.
26 Ladies entered what is considered by many to be the main event in the Ladies' calendar. Eighteen holes are played each day, with three trophies to be fought for. The main Club Champion, the 'Not so Young' (over-fifty Ladies Champion) are the two gross competitions, in addition, is the Ladies Nett Champion.
The first day was blustery, which appears to have become the norm in recent weeks.
Victoria Watts, Maureen Charlton and Suzanne Young were the front runners with a gross 88. The best nett of the day was achieved by Angela Hudd, with an outstanding 68.
The second day, the leading Ladies went out last as seen in the final round of major competitions. The day was sunnier and calmer and those who finished their rounds early were able to relax in the glorious sunshine with their cool drinks, while the last group completed their round. Aimee Sawyer waited
excitedly in anticipation as she had carded a gross 77. The junior Abby Gray also had a good day, finishing with a brilliant nett 69.
The final results were announced by the Lady Captain, Min Woodward. Ladies Club Champion was Aimee Sawyer, with a gross 166 (89 + 77).
The 'Not So Young' Champion was Jackie Walker, with a gross 178 (92 + 86). The Ladies Nett Champion was Abby Gray, with a nett 144 (75 + 69). The other results as follows were: 2nd Gross – Victoria Watts, with a gross 170 (88 + 82), 3rd Gross – Maureen Charlton, with a gross 184 (88 + 96), 2nd Nett – Gail Proctor, with a nett 147 (75 + 72), 3rd Nett – Angela Hudd, with a nett 149 (68 + 81).
36 Ladies took part in the Qualifying Stableford on Thursday, 11th June. Hazel Guthrie amassed an amazing 41 points to take first prize, second was Elaine Davidson, who also had an excellent score of 40 points on countback, third was Carol Jones, also with 40 points, fourth was Jenny Howarth, with 37 points on countback, and fifth was Corrina Bates, also with 37 points. All five Ladies achieved handicap reductions.
Farrington Park Men
Farrington Park's plus two handicapper, Josh Hilleard, put in a stellar performance for Somerset in the South West Counties annual Round Robin Matchplay event, played at the Bristol and Clifton Golf Club. Playing 36 holes each day for six days, Josh's nine wins from ten matches secured the Clifford Burden Trophy for Best
Individual Matchplayer and helped Somerset win the Inter County Team Matchplay Championship. Somerset will now represent the South West at the 2015 England Men's County Championship in September.
On Thursday evening, the B&D team entertained Mendip Spring and finished with a great 4–1 win to
continue the unbeaten start to the season.
On Saturday, the Avalon team welcomed Orchardleigh, hoping to get a first win under their belts, but with two wins and the other three matches being decided on the eighteenth green, they had to settle for a hard-fought half and six points.
6th June was a Saturday of high Stableford scores in not particularly easy conditions. In Division One, Nigel
Denham had a good day at the office, with a score of 42 points to take top spot, with Steve Longden, a close second with 41 points, and Shaun Gulliford in third, with 38 points. In Division Two, good scores were also attained and Haydn Wyatt took top place, with 40 points, beating Matthew Chard into second on countback, and Cameron Goudie, a close third with 39 points.
Division One was topped by three scores of 36 points in the 7th June Sunday Stableford, with John Hogg taking first place on countback from Steve Kingman with Dave Jones in third on the same score. In
Division Two, a great round from James Mason, with 41 points, followed by Neil Herd in second, with 38 points, and Steve Cope in third, with 37 points.
Farrington Park Seniors
With the fine summer weather continuing, a large field took full advantage for the ever-popular Texas Scramble competition. With Farrington Park Senior Membership now standing at 148 members, it was left to the newest recruit, Seamus Ivory, to lead the way home with victory in his first senior outing.
Results: 1st with 62.75, Colin Robinson, Seamus Ivory and Tony Quinn. 2nd with 63.50, Pierce O'Shea, David Elliott and A N Other. 3rd with 63.88, Bill Sims, Richard Dancey and David Lewis. 4th with 64.25, Brian Brown, Philip Michael and Nigel Savage. Nearest the Pin on fifth, Charles Romaine, 8th, Seamus Ivory, and 15th, David Lewis.
Results of friendly matches – lost away to Wells, 4–3, and beat Orchardleigh at home, 5½ – ½ .
