With all the bad press spiders have had recently, what with killer spiders on the loose in Britain, this is one spider that is in the news for the right reasons.

During the summer, Norwest Bowls Club have started off several matches with a Spider Competition to raise funds for the Forever Friends Appeal at the Royal United Hospital. The Spider Competition entails all the players standing around the edge of the green with one foot in the ditch and at a given signal, they all bowl one wood towards the poor old 'spider' in the centre. The player whose wood is nearest is the winner and carries off a bottle of wine, while all the proceeds go to charity.

With players paying fifty pence to enter, we managed to raise the grand sum of £100 for the Forever Friends Appeal.

This week, Club President, Val Bryant, and Competition Organiser, Paul Hill, went along to the Forever Friends Appeal office to meet Zoë Tainton, Appeal Co-ordinator, and hand over the £100 cheque. Thanks go to Paul Hill for organising the competitions and all the players who took part.

Our Ladies AGM was held on October 12th. It was a short, but lively, meeting with several topics up for discussion and was followed by tea, cake and a good old natter.

This Sunday, October 20th, sees the first of Anne Woodham's delicious Sunday lunches at the club. You need to book and I'm not sure if there are any places left, but if you're interested, give her a ring.
