This year, 2018, is significant in that people around the world will mark the day, 100 years ago, that the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War.
On Sunday, 11th November, a huge range of events will take place all over the UK and beyond – not only the Remembrance Parades, but mass bagpipe playing, bells tolling across the world and beacon lighting at 7 p.m., preceded by bugles playing the Last Post.
Midsomer Norton Town Council wishes to support the community by coordinating activities in the town, and at its meeting on 5th March, it agreed to create an informal group to help bring together a day that the community can take part in and remember.
Under the banner ‘Battle’s Over’, a worldwide campaign is being launched to mark the occasion, which the Town Council has undertaken to support.
Cllrs Alastair Slade and Amy Purchase (Independent, Midsomer Norton) will be supported by Council Officers who have already begun working with the Royal British Legion and the town’s Air Training Corps Squadron, who already have ideas for the occasion.
Cllr Slade, who served in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and laid a wreath on Remembrance Sunday in 2017, explained how the Council wanted to promote and coordinate the day: “This year will be something really special for the many thousands of veterans of all conflicts and for the community as a whole. By bringing activities together, the Town Council hopes that it can help the community mark the centenary of Armistice Day in a unique way.
“We want to hear from anyone in the town who wishes to take part – just contact the Town Clerk and we will involve you in what we hope will be a great series of events.”
The first meeting will take place in the spring – the date to be confirmed. Anyone wishing to be involved should contact the Town Clerk on: 01761 418701 or email: [email protected]
