The 2013 Double Hills Ceremony took place in Paulton on Sunday, 1st September, which saw the unveiling of the new addition to the memorial, as well as a Service of Remembrance.
The 35th Double Hills Ceremony is to remember the first casualties of the Battle for Arnhem Bridge. 21 Sappers of the 9th Field Company Royal Engineers and two pilots of the Glider Pilot Regiment Army Air Core crashed into Double Hills Meadow in the village in 1944, en route to Arnhem.
During the ceremony, which saw displays from the Historic Aircraft Middle Wallop and a memorial service, a new addition to the memorial was unveiled. The new addition, in the shape of Pegasus, was created by Dave Tigwell, who lives in Penzance and is the nephew of the youngest 9th Field Company (Airborne) Royal Engineer to die at Double Hills in 1944, Sapper Joseph C Beale, who was aged just eighteen at the time of the accident.
As he regularly attends the memorial service, he suggested that he make a symbol of remembrance to adorn the memorial.
The Pegasus, which continues to be important to Airborne Services, was unveiled during the ceremony.
