Despite the unrelenting rain leaving the course very wet, thirty competitors took part in the Pro Shop Stableford event.

The winner was Jeremy Lawrence, with an excellent 41 points and earning himself a couple of shots reduction in his handicap. In second place was Robert Ware, with 39 points, Chairman of Competitions Ryan Sainsbury was third with 37 and David Braithwaite was fourth with 36.

Nearest the Pin went this week to Ellen Reakes with Scott Butland just beating father Chris for second place.

The Seniors’ Captain, Alan Edwards, was finally able to report the results of the Seniors’ Captain/Vice Captain series of challenges. Seventeen pairs were played against with the Winners announced as David Jukes and Tony Scott, who finished the 18 hole challenge three up. Runners Up, who were two up, were Tony Williams and Adrian Brooking Clark.

Alan also advised that thirty-seven Seniors’ Friendly matches had taken place in 2021 and despite covid restrictions early in the year, only four matches were lost from the original fixture list. Overall, most Home matches were won and most Away matches were lost. A total of seventy-five different Seniors took part in the matches. In addition the Seniors played ten Avalon League matches.

The first Seniors’ event of 2022 took place with one hundred players in a four person team Texas Scrambler. Despite the recent weather the course and greens were in remarkable condition which translated to some amazing scoring.

The Press Correspondent came off the course well satisfied with his team’s gross 70, net 55 score. However, when the results were published this put them exactly mid table!

Winning with an amazing gross 67, net 49 were Alan Snow, Richard Baillon, Justin May and Alan Kay. In second place with a 14 under gross score of 56, net 50 were Chris Lindley, Nick Parfitt, Wayne Spencer and Simon Brand, beating on countback Anthony Roddis, M. Attenborough, Colin Thurston and Henry Banks.

It looks like Seniors golf at Mendip in 2022 is going to be very challenging. It is also a great compliment to Richard Gregory and his greens team that in a very wet January they can produce a course which allows such scoring.

Young Sam Scriven, such a popular member of the Pro Shop Team, continues to grow in confidence in his role week by week. He is also making great strides towards his professional qualifications and following a two day course, is now qualified to assist Assistant Pro, Alex Todd, with his extensive coaching duties.
