It was not only the weather that was sizzling this Sunday at St Andrews Bowls Club, Weston Super Mare, there were some sizzling bowls delivered on the green as well by Somerset’s Under 18’s bowlers.

St Andrews were hosting the annual Under 18’s Singles competition and as always when our Somerset youngsters take to the green we were treated to some amazing bowls.

After an initial knockout round, Cameron from Purnells, Chloe from Norwest and Maddie from Conglesbury Bowls Clubs went on to contest the singles competition while the other bowlers went into a pairs competition. After three nail biting games Cameron finished as runner up while Chloe, having won all of her games, claimed the winners shield. Well done Chloe!

The pairs competition was just as hotly contested with some cracking bowls. The final honours going to Katy of Conglesbury bowls club and Jack from Norwest. Well done Katy and Jack, a great game. The runners up were Oakley from Knowle bowls club and Aaron from Clevedon bowls club.

It was a super day and the atmosphere on the green and the camaraderie of our youngsters was an absolute pleasure. Well done to all our young Somerset bowlers. You are a credit to yourselves, your coaches and your clubs.

Lastly, a huge THANKYOU to St. Andrews for your excellent hospitality, to Avon Sports Ground Maintenance Ltd for their sponsorship, to the umpires and to all our Somerset leaders who work so hard on behalf of our youngsters.

Overall the day was a huge success and I’m sure all those who came along to cheer our young bowlers on will agree that the future of bowls looks rosy and our Somerset young bowlers are a credit to our county.
