COUNCILLORS in Peasedown St John have written to the leadership at Bath & North East Somerset Council – asking for traffic calming measures to be installed in one of the village’s most well-used streets.

A community-wide survey carried out by Independent Councillors Karen Walker and Gavin Heathcote earlier this year discovered that residents want to see more being done to cut vehicle speeds in Bath Road.

Bath Road is the main thoroughfare through the centre of the village that connects over 2,000 homes with local shops, amenities, eateries, churches and Peasedown St John Primary School.

The councillors said:“Residents are particularly concerned about the speeds of vehicles along the stretch of road between the Red Post Inn and the Hive Community Centre.”

Cllrs Walker and Heathcote have written to B&NES Council’s resources (finance) committee to ask for £15,000 to install a flashing ‘Slow Down’ Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) in the location, following the success that other village VAS signs have had in cutting vehicle speeds.

They said: “We’ve arranged for other flashing VAS signs to be installed over the years in Orchard Way and Eckweek Road, and the results have been incredibly positive with a noticeable reduction in vehicle speeds.”

The Peasedown councillors’ request will be submitted to the cross-party group of councillors that scrutinise B&NES’ finances – and then passed onto the Cabinet and Full Council for consideration.

Cllrs Walker and Heathcote will be keeping residents updated about the campaign through their monthly e-newsletter. Anyone who’d like to subscribe can email [email protected]

Cllr Walker has also asked the Highways Department at the council to repair, replace and resurface many of the broken pavements along this stretch of road too. She’s hoping that funding can be included in the next financial year budget.
